    Responsibilities

    Assess, treat, and care for patients with breathing disorders. Initiate and conduct therapeutic procedures, maintain patient records, as well as, select, assemble, check, and operate appropriate respiratory equipment. Provide respiratory therapy services according to Brookdale and HIPAA guidelines.

    1. Educates patients/families about their conditions and teaches appropriate disease management techniques, such as breathing exercises and the use of medication and respiratory equipment, in compliance with HIPPA.
    2. Inspects, cleans, tests, and maintains respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently.
    3. Monitors patient’s physiological responses to therapy, such as: vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes.
    4. Responsible for equipment accountability, maintenance, and inventory.
    5. Determines requirements for treatments, including method and duration of therapy, precautions to be taken, and medication and dosages compatible with physicians’ orders.
    6. Conducts tests including: electrocardiograms, stress testing, and lung capacity tests to evaluate patients cardiopulmonary functions.
    7. Reads medical orders, measures arterial blood gases, and reviews patient information to assess patient condition.
    8. Relays therapy and blood analysis results to a physician using a variety of testing techniques to assist doctors in approved cardiac and pulmonary research and to diagnose disorders.
    9. Documents in the medical record to include treatments, outcomes, and evaluations.
    10. Educates patients and their families about their conditions and teaches appropriate disease management techniques in compliance with HIPAA.

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience
    Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program required. Minimum one year experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Long-term care field preferred.

     

    Certifications, Licenses, and Other Special Requirements
    Certified Respiratory Therapist or Registered Respiratory Therapist.

     

    Management/Decision Making
    Applies existing guidelines and procedures to make varied decisions within a department. Uses sound judgment and experience to solve moderately complex problems based on precedent, example, reasonableness or a combination of these.

     

    Knowledge and Skills

    Possesses extensive knowledge of a distinct skill or function and a thorough understanding of the organization and work environment. Has working knowledge of a functional discipline. Basic computer software skills in Microsoft Word and Excel. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of the residents served. Ability to maintain the highest standards of ethical professional and clinical judgment. Ability to address staff and patients in a courteous and friendly manner as well as accept constructive criticism. Must be willing to communicate with patients of various levels of functioning and various types of personalities. Willingness to communicate perceived physical and emotional needs of patients to other skilled staff to assist with addressing their care needs. Ability to maintain resident confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA policies.
